There are many web maps sites out there on the internet. Even the idea of showing all the Wikipedia articles with coordinates attached to on maps is already realized by someone already. wiki-map.com and map.openseamap.org are two great websites to view Wikipedia entries on maps. There are 1.2 million articles that contain geographic coordinates on English Wikipedia. That is about 1/5 of all Wikipedia articles. Also, there are more than 1.8 million biographies on English Wikipedia. It will be good and fun for someone in this world to find all biographies of a location and all locations of a biography, and even better, viewing those on a map. So, this site is created.
The leaflet is used to create an interactive map. Geographic data from OpenStreetMap, Mapbox, Google, and Bing are used to provide global vector maps, satellite imageries. Datatable is used to create a flexible table on the page. All the Wikipedia locations and biographies are extracted and processed from the English Wikipedia dump files. Some fonts are from Google. Some of the CSS frameworks are from Skeleton. Thanks for everything that makes this site possible.
Mapmaking and Map curation was not so easy because of the scarcity of geographic data and professional skills before the emerging of the internet. However, everything has changed since the debut of the internet, satellite imagery, GPS, and web maps such as Google maps and Openstreetmap.
Mapmaking and Map curation should be as easy as the ordering of a pizza in our era.
First, you select the dough of your pizza, which is a metaphor for the basic style of your background map.
second, you decide what kinds of toppings you liked, whether they are beef, shrimp, sausage, squid, chicken or broccoli, pineapple, onion, mushroom, pepper, you just pick some and add to the dough of your pizza, then you can wait for the baked pizza. The toppings of a map are the locations, features you are interested in the world.
So, maptoppings.com tries to make people enjoy their favorite toppings on maps.
